Cargo Cult :
Cargo Cult :
a type of religious practice that appears in many traditional tribal societies in the wake of interactions with technologically advanced cultures. The cults are focused on obtaining the material wealth (the "cargo") of the advanced culture through magic and religious rituals and practices, believing that the wealth was intended for them by their deities and ancestors.

The Virtual Public Art Project presents “Cargo,” three augmented reality totems for the gods and demons of the information age. Assisting cargo cults by presenting them with a place to reflect on the never-ending growth and unlimited material wealth of the industrial age. Also with hopes that some post-modern deities will fill them with new promises in place of the emptiness that has been left behind. Cargo spans the globe with ten different locations placed over empty ruins of left-behind industries and other man made wastelands.
The cargo container is used for the transportation and storage of moving products and raw materials between locations or countries. There are approximately seventeen million containers in the world, a product themselves of the industries that they serve. Cargo is the creation of Christian Meinhardt.
